Obituary for Jason "Duck" DeWayne Smith

Boonville, IN – Born to Lea Ann and Jerry Smith on July 27, 1992 in Boonville, IN. Passed away on February 15, 2019 at the age of 26 at the IU Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, IN.
Graduated from Boonville High School, a 10 year member of the Dayville at the crossing 4-H Club, where he got the nickname “Duck” as he loved the ducks, rabbits, pigeons, rockets and models that also went to the Indiana state fair and won blue ribbons and special merits awards.
He loved restoring his 1977 Honda Z50 that he received for Christmas in 2002. He then showed it at the Antique Automobile Club of America Nationals under his father’s name as he had to be 16 to enter but was only 10 years old. The Z50 won AACA National 1st place Jr., Sr., and Grand National Jr., and Sr. and was nominated for best motorcycle of the year.
He also loved riding his dirt bikes and playing paintball but had to quit later in life due to his illnesses, hereditary pancreatitis and type 1 diabetes.
He was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 7, then only 2 months later he was found to have pancreatitis when Riley’s Children Hospital removed 7 stones from his pancreas.
He was brave and tuff every year with spending more weeks in the hospital. By the time he was 17, he was in the hospital over 100 days a year.
IU hospital did a Whipple surgery to remove the worse half of his pancreas in an attempt to help with the chronic pain, though it helped very little. They followed up by removing the entire pancreas.
Although the removal helped him recover from his pancreatitis, he then had an impossible time controlling his blood sugar level. He went into a coma on 3/27/13 due to low blood sugar and was put on life support. They gave us 72 hours to decide to pull the plug, but that was Wednesday before Easter and with a lot of prayer he started to show signs of improvement on Good Friday. We were able to postpone the decision of pulling the plug but they said he would be a vegetable and that he would have to live in a nursing home.
On Easter Sunday, 3/31/13, a miracle happened… He woke up! Four days later Jason was able to come home. He was put on the transplant list after a series of tests and classes and he received a pancreases transplant later that year. He kept the transplants for a year before his body rejected it.
In those few years, Jason had over 7 major surgeries on his stomach alone. He had been in two comas and had coded on the operation table at least three times.
He had been dealing with demons for a while and was trying to get his life back on track with the help of his wonderful friend, Katliyn Rittel. He started to see life in a new way.
He will be deeply missed as he was loved by so many.
He is preceded in death by his grandfathers, John L. Smith, Frank McGhee and step grandfather, John Armstrong.
He is survived by his parents, Jerry and Lea Ann Smith; sister Lisa Harper (Adam); nephew Hunter Harper; nieces Heidi and Haylie Harper; grandmothers Sue Smith, Eva McGhee Armstrong; aunts and uncles Darrell Smith (Martha), Randy Smith (Jamie), Frank McGhee Jr., Iva Verbal (Derrick) and Carol Buttery (Eddie) as well as his cousins and his real friends.
Services for Jason will be 2 PM on Sunday, February 24, 2019 at Koehler Funeral home in Boonville, Indiana with Pastor Dan Kennedy officiating and burial at Mills Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 10 AM until the time of service at the funeral home on Sunday.
Thanks to Dr. Sherman at IU for all of the years of his pancreatic care.
